In a first day in his new role, Zohran Mamdani committed to “reinvent” America's largest city, ushering in “a new era” and an bold beginning to his tenure.

A Historic Leader

The young figure, who was a relatively obscure state assemblyman, has become the city's first Muslim mayor. He additionally marked a milestone by being the first to be sworn in using the Qur'an.

“A opportunity of this kind comes rarely and rarer still is it that the people themselves whose hold the mechanisms of progress,” Mamdani added.

Defying counsel to be modest, the mayor declared: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to change is that of modest goals. Beginning today we will govern with courage and vision.”

Governing with Socialist Convictions

Mamdani did not shy away from his socialist politics. “I was elected as a democratic socialist and I will govern as one. I will not abandon my ideals for worry of being called radical,” he said to an enthusiastic response.

The swearing-in was a two-part event, starting with a late-night oath-taking in a old subway station. He was formally sworn in on the steps of city hall by political ally Bernie Sanders, who spoke of Mamdani's rise as a victory over the status quo.

A Costly Blueprint

Mamdani now faces one of the most unrelenting jobs in American politics, with a platform promising:

• No-cost bus transit
• A cap on rents for about 1 million households
• A trial program of city-run grocery stores

The projected $10 billion expense of these programs may be challenging to finance. Mamdani has pledged to raise taxes on the city's top earners and big business. However, as a city subject to the state government, he will require the backing of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Navigating External Dynamics

The new mayor must contend with apprehension from some Jewish New Yorkers alarmed by his past criticisms regarding Israel. Tensions were revealed during the transition when a senior aide stepped down over offensive past comments.

Mamdani has attempted to address these concerns by persuading Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to stay on, avoiding the optics of losing a top Jewish official.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has labeled Mamdani a “socialist” and threatened withholding federal funding. Despite this, a recent meeting between the two was described as unexpectedly cordial.

The Core Tests of Leadership

Ultimately, New York mayors are judged on their ability in delivering basic services: trash collection, curbing the rodent problem, fixing potholes, and ensuring reliable transit operation.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams highlighted his team's anti-crime efforts, pointing to record low numbers of murders and shootings in 2025, with 301 homicides reported.

As his work starts, Mamdani and his wife will relocate from their Queens apartment to the historic Gracie Mansion. The outgoing mayor offered a quirky warning about a reputed resident spirit in the home, which allegedly only haunts those who do not act to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani concluded his remarks with a direct statement: “The work has only just begun.”
