Two Individuals Detained Regarding Phone Concealed in Commons to Allegedly Broadcast Inappropriate Sounds At PMQs

Police have taken into custody a duo of individuals related to a cellular device discovered concealed within the parliamentary chamber, which was reportedly intended to play sex noises during the weekly parliamentary session.

Finding and Probe

This phone was uncovered close to the government benches during a standard security check of the hall. Authorities suspect it was planned to interrupt the regular debate between Keir Starmer and Kemi Badenoch in September.

An official spokesperson commented, “At 10.25 on that specific date, a device was found during a routine search of the parliamentary hall.”

Arrests and Charges

Investigations suggested that the device was purposely placed in a location with the aim of creating interference to business in the house.

  • A man in his thirties was detained on Friday 5 September on suspected grounds of trying to intentionally cause a public nuisance.
  • A second person in his 60s was arrested on Tuesday 30 September on suspicion of the same offence.
  • Both have been bailed to return at a future time.

Security Measures and Impact

Heightened security measures were implemented in the Commons after the device was discovered. Sound-guided visits and guided tours were called off, and there was reduced access to the Commons chamber.

The House of Lords followed suit to reduce access to the Lords Chamber “for safety reasons.”

The spokesperson added, “Enquiries remain ongoing, and we continue to keep the speaker and clerk informed with our probe.”

Gravity of the Event

This incident is being treated seriously as it represents a significant violation of legislative safety. This device was located while hundreds security staff based in the parliamentary area were on industrial action over pay and conditions.

Consequently, visitors were banned from the legislative grounds. Labor representatives explained that the strike went ahead due to cutbacks in holiday time, unchanged salaries, and an ethnicity pay gap.
