The Iconic Puzzle Game Didn't Triumph at The Game Awards — Another Award Type Might Solve This

Each time a major awards ceremony nears, one notices an outcry for introducing fresh award types to honor underappreciated efforts and fill the passions of enthusiasts with niche passions.

A fellow writer previously argued for a horror game category. That would rule. The same goes for strategy board titles, which is a passionate advocate's mission. However, I must insist for pushing forward because like all single-minded supporters, I have a cast-iron argument for why my demand stands as crucial above others. The demand is this: It's essential to create a classification for brain-teasing titles.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Classifying creative works defies precise measurement; opinions vary greatly, and it will always generate discussions concluding with vague boundaries. This explains why film award organizations avoid this approach. Yet it remains a necessary evil within the realm of gaming, that demonstrate such variety it's challenging to consider them as a single art form.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of gaming accomplishments to be recognized, while allowing diverse titles to compete fairly, classification by type becomes crucial.

Current Gaming Award Categories

Leading game ceremonies presently include genre categories for Action, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Together, these classifications effectively encompass numerous genres, and you can find room for numerous titles.

This doesn't apply to puzzle games. No appropriate category exists to put them. Think about these outstanding current releases, all very different: the architectural riddles of one title, the pulse-pounding block-matching from another release, thought-provoking social scenarios from additional release. Where could they possibly go among existing types? Simply put, no category fits.

The Representation Problem

Numerous examples exist of brilliant puzzle games published annually without proper recognition in entertainment awards, unless they happen to qualify for categories like Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, or the extremely competitive Indie races.

  • An iconic brain-teaser wasn’t nominated in any category that year
  • A different innovative game missed out during that ceremony
  • A beloved organization game was overlooked in 2021
  • Just some brain-teasers managed to sneak into independent or mobile categories

Value of Brain-Teasers

Frequently they represent modest productions, yet the craft in brain-teasers carries substantial weight. Well-known matching games count as most engaged experiences worldwide maintaining this status for many years.

The legendary block-stacking game competes with popular creative games competing to become best-selling game of all time; it also contends as greatest title ever. Logic titles represent cornerstones to the art of video games, and engaging with almost every other genre.

The Solution and Justification

Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter such difficulty. One could readily select a field of five interesting, varied, worthy titles each ceremony simply — perhaps, with difficulty, given the need to exclude many worthy titles.

To emphasize again, these include experiences lacking appropriate categories in important events. Logic title developers operate at the hard edge game development, creating some of most fundamental forms of gaming itself. Just like cinema stunt performers, they merit acknowledgment. Don't make them wait generations.
