The golfing superstar hails BBC's top sports success with individual and team accolades.

Seconds before he was crowned, a anxious thought darted through Rory McIlroy's mind. He revealed he was hoping, "Please don't let it be an F1 driver this time."

"This has been a tremendous night for golf," McIlroy declared. "The sport was recognized in such a big way, with the team winning and then with my award. It's a huge moment for golf, and hopefully we can use that."

In this instance, however, there was no last-minute surprise. The result was clear, allowing a delighted McIlroy to reflect on a standout evening for both himself and the European Ryder Cup winners, who were crowned the top squad.

A Whirlwind Schedule

Choosing not to celebrate at the official reception, McIlroy was already focusing on his next sporting adventure. Having just played in the Golf Channel Games in Florida and jetted to the UK, he was returning immediately to Florida.

"The last 24 hours have been a hectic 24 hours," the golfer noted. "I'm looking forward to a little bit of a break over Christmas."

Drive to Improve

That said, McIlroy made clear he has no plans to become complacent, even after achieving the career grand slam earlier in the year. "My belief is I've got a several strong seasons in me," he remarked.

"More majors, season-long rankings, Ryder Cups, that's great. But provided that you feel like you can keep improving and have the desire, that's the key."

Squad Celebration

Elsewhere, teammate Tommy Fleetwood, who was on stage to collect the squad honor, also applauded golf's stellar night and his great friend's award.

"They are the memories that will stay with us forever so to get the people's vote for that is amazing," he commented. "Seeing Rory pick that up, I think he has earned it so much."

When reminded that McIlroy was only the third in his sport to win the award in its long history, Fleetwood grinned before adding, "Golfers aren't top of the list are we!"

Next Targets

Fleetwood hopes to at last capture his initial major championship next year but he understands McIlroy still thirsts for more success. "If you want to be the best you can be, and you're still inspired, you'll find things to improve," he noted.

United Hopes

Prior to his departure, a last query was raised. Being a massive Manchester United fan, he has been asked to parade his trophies at Old Trafford before. Might he be convinced to do it again after his new triumphs?

"If they stop conceding four goals at home," he answered with a smile. "They're getting better. There's a little bit of hope around."

Following a truly spectacular season, it's understandable that the champion golfer is seeing the upside.
