The Compassion of Unknown Individuals: The Way a Man I Had Just Met Helped Me Land the Role That Transformed My Existence

During the closing decade of the 80s, I was beginning a backpacking trip to the European continent with a travel partner. Because my companion was considering pursuing a master’s degree in the Big Apple, we had planned a 14-day stopover there on the way to London.

We arrived at the graduate housing, a big multi-story edifice on the UWS named International House. Once we unpacked, we made our way to the canteen, where we grabbed food, sat down, and began chatting with people eating there.

Adjacent to my seat was an individual of Iraqi origin studying engineering at an Ivy League institution. He wanted to know what I my profession was, and I shared that I had just graduated with a degree in science and had been conducting research using an electron microscope.

He mentioned that there was an electron microscope unit at the university – right next door to the engineering department, which was why he was aware of it. He proposed that I ought to seek a position with them. I dismissed the idea, explaining that I was heading off to Europe and, more critically, I lacked a US visa.

The following day I toured the city, returning to the canteen that evening. The man from Iraq came up to me and told me that he had arranged an interview for me with the director of the microscopy lab at Columbia. Given that he had gone to the trouble, I attended the interview – but immediately explained to my host that I was without a work permit, so I was likely not a suitable candidate.

Reflecting the city's spirit – a metropolis where opportunities abound – she responded: “We can make that happen. When can you start?” I didn't board the aircraft to London.

I worked there for three years. One of the benefits was that I also received complimentary education at Columbia, and I used the opportunity to finish a graduate degree in global studies.

I lost touch with him and I am unaware of his name, but his remarkable generosity transformed my future in multiple respects. I lacked the bravery or nerve to reach out at an elite institution and request employment. Additionally, I had consistently hoped to study abroad, but wouldn't have been able to pay for it without that tuition waiver.

What's more, that job in New York led me to a role in Europe where I met my beautiful French husband, with whom I currently share four amazing children. That encounter altered everything. That helpful person changed my trajectory in life, and I’m eternally thankful.
