Micky van de Ven scored on two occasions as Spurs extended their unbeaten run in away games in the Premier League and handed the Toffees their initial loss at Hill Dickinson Stadium.

The Toffees were unbeaten in their last five matches at their new ground at Bramley-Moore Dock, having departed their historic home behind after 133 years at the conclusion of the previous campaign.

But Spurs captain the Dutchman struck twice from set-pieces in the opening 45 minutes to put their strong form at risk, and they were unable to mount a comeback before the midfielder - set up by ex-Everton forward the Brazilian - nodded in a third to seal the victory.

Jake O'Brien believed he had equalized the scores five minutes after Van de Ven's first goal, glancing a powerful header past the Spurs keeper from an Everton corner.

The Portuguese striker, in the meantime, failed to convert a handful of opportunities, while Vicario made a series of excellent stops to guarantee Tottenham went five away games unbeaten in the Premier League.

But the VAR stepped in, advising the match official to review the score on the screen and the referee decided that Jack Grealish and the attacker were in offside positions and had impeded with the Tottenham goalkeeper.

The win moves the manager's side into third place in the Premier League, five points off local foes and table-toppers Arsenal.

The Merseyside club remain 14th and sit six points clear of the drop zone.

Spurs breakdown: The defender excels in duties at both ends of pitch

Following a uninspiring weekday display in the Champions League against the French side, where they mustered a mere two shots on target, the manager opted for the French striker up front instead of former Toffees player the Brazilian.

The summer signing was failed to influence the game before being substituted for the substitute after an hour on the pitch, but it turns out he proved unnecessary in the final outcome.

Defender Van de Ven converted into an offensive threat to be feared.

Spurs' first goal came from a well-worked corner routine, with the midfielder directing the ball back across the six-yard box for an free the defender to score.

And Ven de Ven - stepping up as skipper in the Argentine's unavailability - added his next goal in added time as he outjumped Jordan Pickford to nod in.

The Dutchman was just as impressive in defence, partnering well with Kevin Danso as the duo handled superbly with the 34 crosses thrown their way by Everton.

Toffees breakdown: Toffees lacking striker's instinct

The club's new home had been a fortress, but it appears the novelty may have faded somewhat and fans headed to the exits after the midfielder's third for Tottenham.

The break in the team's winning streak at home will not be a major concern for David Moyes, but their attacking woes are.

Beto and the other striker - the Everton's pair of recognised centre-forwards - had netted only one league goal between them before the weekend's outing.

And they were failed to contribute to that miserable record on a damp and dreary night on Merseyside.

Beto's form was epitomized when he chose to bicycle-kick a clear chance from near the goal, despite having room and time to reposition for a simpler attempt that would have challenged the keeper.

Barry, as well, failed to influence the game after coming on for Beto in the second half.

It was not for a shortage of chance. The majority of Everton's attacks came through Grealish and the forward, who tirelessly whipped threatening crosses into the Tottenham box.

The Toffees: Moyes' men head to Sunderland in the top flight on Monday, 3 November at 8 PM.

Tottenham: The London club go to St James' Park on late October for their next round Carabao Cup match against Newcastle.
