Major Russian Strikes Cut Electricity Across Ukraine's Capital

Power facilities under attack in the region
Ukraine's energy systems have come under escalating attacks in the past few days

Overnight, Russian missile and drone strikes have resulted in power cuts in extensive areas of the capital city, Kyiv.

Nine people were hurt while residents in the city's east were left without electricity and dealt with problems to drinking water, as stated by municipal leaders.

At the same time, a seven-year-old child was fatally injured in a separate aerial attack in the Zaporizhzhia area in the southern area, as reported by area administrators.

Moscow has escalated strikes on power infrastructure over the last fortnight, while the country's government has requested "substantial measures" from allies to increase pressure on Moscow.

"What is required is not symbolic gestures but firm measures - from the United States, the EU and the major economies - in supplying air defence systems and implementing sanctions," he wrote in a online statement.

Authorities reported that 450 drones and more than 30 rockets struck energy facilities, characterizing such strikes as "cynical and calculated" and against "essential services" as the weather cools.

The energy minister said Russia was "launching a major assault" and repair crews were striving to restore power.

A series of attacks damaged power facilities and apartment buildings in Kyiv.

Multiple people injured in the assaults on the capital have been hospitalized, per statements from municipal representatives.

Regional authorities said the metropolitan region came under significant strikes overnight. A minor was killed and multiple civilians were wounded.

The attacks come after nights of air raids in the region, sections of which are currently controlled by Moscow's military.

The entire country is on alert for advanced weapon attacks, which are harder to identify.

Government officials told journalists that Moscow was purposely seeking to destroy the country's energy grid, with assaults already affecting gas facilities.

Authorities confirmed energy workers and government agencies were anticipating further attacks.
