Administration Reveals Federal Worker Layoffs as Shutdown Approaches Three-Week Mark
The White House disclosed the initiation of government employee terminations on Friday, following through on prior threats in response to the continuing US government shutdown, which is set to stretch into its third straight week.
Official Announcement and Early Information
The director of the White House budget office wrote on social media that “reductions in force have begun,” indicating the government’s procedure for letting employees go.
Although the official did not specify which departments were affected, a treasury spokesperson confirmed that notices had been distributed within that agency. Furthermore, a DHS spokesperson noted that staff reductions would also occur at the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency. Moreover, a labor organization for federal workers confirmed that employees at the Education Department would be affected by the reduction in force.
Union Response and Legal Challenges
Labor representatives warned that the terminations would have “severe consequences” on public services relied upon by the public and vowed to contest the moves in the legal system.
This is shameful that the government has exploited the government shutdown as an excuse to wrongfully terminate thousands of workers who provide critical services to the public nationwide,” said Everett Kelley, representing the American Federation of Government Employees.
The largest labor federation in the US reacted to the announcement, saying, “America’s unions will see you in court.”
Political Standoff and Budget Dispute
Lawmakers from the Democratic party have declined to support a Republican-backed bill to restore funding unless it contains provisions related to health policy. After repeated failed attempts, the GOP leadership in the Senate have adjourned the Senate until next Tuesday, meaning the standoff is not expected to be ended soon.
At a press conference, the Republican House speaker, Mike Johnson, criticized Senate Democrats for not supporting the GOP bill, which passed in the House on a near party-line vote.

These terminations occurred on the same day that federal workers got only a incomplete payment covering the end of September but not the start of the current month, since funding expired at the beginning of the month.
Max Stier, the president of the non-profit Partnership for Public Service, condemned the gridlock’s impact on federal employees.
This is unjust to make government staff suffer because our elected officials in the legislature and the administration have failed to keep our government open and operational,” Stier said. “Our flight regulators, veterans’ healthcare providers, wildland firefighters and safety officials are not responsible for this funding crisis.”
The irony is that members of Congress and top administration officials are continuing to be paid amid the funding gap.
